
Picture a kitchen tonight. Dishes drying, mail in a pile, the credit card statement open on the counter. She spots a charge she doesn’t recognize and asks about it.
Now run that moment twice.
In the first version, he says: “Oh. Yeah, I need to walk you through that one. Can we do it after dinner? I want to actually explain it.”
Dinner ends. He walks her through it. Ten minutes, settled.
In the second version, he says: “Why are you going through the statements? And speaking of spending, weren’t you the one who wanted to redo the bathroom this year?”
Twenty minutes later they’re deep in an argument about the bathroom. The charge never comes up again.
It never does.
